The best Snapchat alternative for sexting depends on what you want to fix
The short answer. The best Snapchat alternative depends on your goal: Signal or WhatsApp encrypt messages end to end by default for people who already know each other; an app with photo-free profiles suits meeting someone new without showing your face; Kik and Discord let you sign up without a phone number. Only one, Hush, says on an official page that it blocks screenshots inside conversations.
People usually go looking for a Snapchat alternative for one of three reasons. They learned the hard way that a snap can be screenshotted. They want to talk with someone new without that conversation sitting in the same app as their friends and family. Or they simply want something more private than an app built around the camera. Each reason points to a different replacement, and none of them is perfect.
Below, we go through the realistic options using the same ten criteria as our full ranking. Every fact comes from an official page (terms, help center, privacy policy or App Store listing) listed in our methodology. When a cell is a question mark, it means we couldn't verify it on an official source, not that the app fails.
What exactly is wrong with Snapchat for intimate chats?
Two things we could verify, and a lot we couldn't.
Verified: Snapchat's help center confirms that recipients can take a screenshot of a snap, so "disappearing" is never a guarantee. And its terms do not set 18 as the minimum age, so you cannot assume the person on the other end is an adult.
Verified in Snapchat's favor: it is free, it describes active moderation in its community guidelines, and it partly lets you meet new people.
Not verified: whether a photo or phone number is required, what other users see about you by default, whether private messages are end-to-end encrypted, and what profiles show. We are not saying Snapchat lacks encryption; we found no official source we could cite either way.
So the honest case for switching is not "Snapchat is unsafe." It is that the feature people trust most, disappearing content, does not stop a determined recipient from keeping what you send.
Which alternative fits which need?
You want stronger protection for what you write: Signal or WhatsApp
If the person you're talking to is someone you already know, the most meaningful upgrade is end-to-end encryption by default. Both Signal and WhatsApp encrypt private messages end to end by default, according to their official pages.
What you give up: both require a phone number at registration, so the other person may see it. WhatsApp is not anonymous by default and only connects you with existing contacts. For Signal, we found no official source describing a way to meet people you don't know. Neither app's terms set 18 as the minimum age. Signal does let you use it without a profile photo, and photos are optional there.
Best for: couples and people who already trust each other.
You want to meet someone new without showing your face
This is where a lot of people leaving Snapchat feel the gap. An app where profiles carry no photo removes the pressure to show yourself before you're ready, and makes the classic "send a selfie first" scam harder to pull off.
In our comparison, Hush is the only app whose profiles show no photo by design. It is an anonymous no-photo chat app: profiles carry no photo, none is required, its core feature is connecting you with new people, it describes moderation on its safety page, it is 18+ only with age verified at sign-up, screenshots are blocked inside its conversations, and it is free to use. Its limits are verified too: sign-up requires phone verification, and its messages are not end-to-end encrypted. Our head-to-head of Hush and Snapchat goes row by row.
You don't want to give out a phone number at all
Two apps in our comparison have official pages saying you can avoid it:
- Kik works with a username and, per its store listing, without a phone number. The listing also describes it as anonymous by default and built for meeting new people. We could not verify its moderation, encryption or minimum age from official pages. See our Hush vs Kik breakdown.
- Discord accepts sign-up with an email address. It doesn't require a profile photo, describes moderation in its guidelines, and lets you meet people through open servers. Its terms do not set 18 as the minimum age, and we couldn't verify end-to-end encryption for direct messages. More in Hush vs Discord.
You want a service whose terms are adults-only
Feeld, Grindr and Tinder set 18 as the minimum age in their own terms, which Snapchat, Discord, Signal and WhatsApp do not. Hush is 18+ only too, as covered above. The three dating apps connect you with new people and are free to download. The catch, if faceless conversation is the goal: Grindr and Tinder are built around profiles with photos, and for Feeld we found no official source describing profile photos.
What about Telegram?
Telegram comes up a lot as a Snapchat replacement. According to its FAQ, only Secret Chats are end-to-end encrypted, and you have to start one deliberately; an account is created with a phone number. It describes screenshot alerts, not a block we could verify. If you go that route, use Secret Chats for anything personal. Our Hush vs Telegram page has the full grid.

What does no alternative fix?
Only one app in our comparison, Hush, has an official page saying it blocks screenshots inside conversations. Even so, a second phone pointed at the screen gets around every protection. Switching apps changes who can find you and who can read your messages in transit. It does not change what the other person can keep.
That's why the habits matter more than the app:
- Lead with words. A message that builds anticipation does more than a photo, and it can't be used against you the same way. Our guide to sexting without pics is full of ideas.
- No face, no identifying details in anything you do send: tattoos, a recognizable room, a reflection.
- No early video calls with someone you met online. That is a common opening move in sextortion.
- Keep a separate identity for new people: a handle you don't use on Instagram, TikTok or Venmo.
How do you switch without losing the person you're talking to?
If you want to move an existing conversation off Snapchat, ask rather than announce. "Would you be up for moving this to Signal? I'd feel better about it" frames it as care, not suspicion. If the other person refuses to move anywhere encrypted or keeps pushing for photos, that tells you something too.
If you're starting fresh with strangers, pick the app for the need you identified above, set up a profile with nothing that links back to your real life, and keep the first conversations in writing.
What if something has already gone wrong on Snapchat?
If someone has saved a snap and is threatening you: don't pay, save the evidence (their username, the messages, any payment requests), block and report them in the app, and report extortion at ic3.gov. StopNCII.org can help stop intimate images of adults from spreading on partner platforms, and NCMEC's Take It Down helps with images taken when the person was under 18. Our sexting safety guide walks through each step.
Frequently asked questions
Is there an app that blocks screenshots completely?
Not completely. Of the twelve apps we compared, only Hush has an official page saying screenshots are blocked inside conversations. And a second phone can always photograph a screen.
Which Snapchat alternative is the most private?
For message content between people who know each other, Signal and WhatsApp, which encrypt end to end by default. For hiding your face from strangers, an app with photo-free profiles.
Which apps work without a phone number?
According to their official sources, Kik (with a username) and Discord (with an email address). Signal, WhatsApp and Telegram require a number.
Is Snapchat end-to-end encrypted?
We couldn't verify it on an official source we could cite. That is not a claim that it isn't, only that the cell stays a question mark in our comparison.
Are any of these apps adults-only?
Hush, Feeld, Grindr and Tinder set 18 as the minimum age; Hush also verifies age at sign-up. Snapchat, Discord, Signal and WhatsApp do not.
